Kickoff for our Violence Free Begins With Me Campaign

In addition to the OVW Consolidated Grant to increase victim counseling services and prevention programs in area
schools and at other youth serving agencies, The Rural Erie County Domestic Violence Task Force is announcing the
implementation of a coordinated mobile outreach ‘Violence Free Begins With Me’ program.

The United Way of Erie County and the Erie Community Foundation have provided Safe Journey with supplemental
funding to purchase a van to conduct mobile awareness and prevention programs at area parks, playgrounds, and at
community events. It is wrapped it in a colorful display with some of the prevention program characters, including our
local hometown helping heroes. It will help children and youth to quickly identify the van at a glance. The van will carry
equipment such as tables, chairs, popups and program supplies, that will be used outdoors, by the trained prevention

The outreach van will take the “Violence Free Begins with Me” prevention message, programs and services to rural
youth throughout the county at area mobile and housing neighborhoods, parks, playgrounds, and at community events.
Other outreach sites will include the Salvation Army after-school program, faith-based youth groups,YMCA, Boy/Girl
Scouts, 4-H, Head Start, residential treatment facilities, alternative education programs, and community based
wraparound programs. We can also take it to county and community fairs to spread awareness of the various
prevention campaigns, such as bystander intervention, engaging men as allies and victim services available in the

Safe Journey advocates will be providing “Violence Free Begins with Me” prevention programs throughout the
year in area school districts.
